Catholic Graduate Expectation that we are learning about this month connects perfectly to our St. Mary School Advent project. We can be responsible citizens by:
  • helping the poor

  • caring for our classmates and those around us who need help

  • standing up for what is right.

Mother Teresa said, “Not all of us can do great things.  But we can all do small things  with great love.”  We have decided that during this season of Advent, we will “do something small, with great love.”  We would like everyone at St. Mary School to help us collect new socks for the needy men and women who rely on the Shepherds of Good Hope for support.

The Shepherds of Good Hope:

  • is the largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to the needs of the homeless and impoverished in the city of Ottawa

  • provides people with a hot meal, clothing, groceries and support for people who are looking for a friendly ear to listen

  • over 500 people sleep in one of our 8 facilities across the city every night

  • over 1600 people visit the shelter each day

By collecting socks for the needy, we recognize that “we have responsibilities.”  If everyone in this school brought in one pair of new socks, we would be able to give almost 400 people a new pair of socks this winter.  We can also show we are responsible citizens by:

  • helping our friends at school when they are hurt

  • sharing with others

  • standing up for others

  • telling the truth.

We will be collecting socks from December 1st to 16th so as to allow adequate time for delivery.  During the Advent season, we will have liturgies in our school gym on the following dates:

Advent (Week 1) Tuesday, December 2nd at 1:30 p.m.

Advent (Week 2) Tuesday, December 9th at 11:00 a.m.

Advent (Week 3) Tuesday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m.

We will then gather in January to recognize the girls and boys at St. Mary School who have exemplified the characteristics of a Responsible Citizen. Thank you in advance for supporting us with this very worthwhile Advent outreach project.
